Furnace Start Up; Do I Need to Do Anything Before I Turn on My Heater?
As the homeowner, when the furnace fails to start up, there are a few steps you can take to see if you can restart your furnace. To troubleshoot some basic problems that you can easily correct yourself, follow the following steps to see if you can get your furnace to start up.
Step 1. Check the Circuit Breakers – The furnace may be failing to start because the furnace’s circuit breaker has tripped. Check the HVAC system’s breaker and reset it and see if that helps start up the furnace.
Step 2. Check the Thermostat – After checking the circuit breaker, you will want to make sure that your thermostat setting is correct. Sometimes the setting can get messed up and set to the wrong setting. Make sure the thermostat is on, make sure it is set to heat and also set to auto.
Step 3. Check the Furnace Filter – The furnace unit has its own filter that is not the same as the return vent filters. This filter is often neglected and can prevent the furnace from starting up once it becomes too dirty. Make sure to check the furnace filter and see if it is dirty.
Step 4. Check the Pilot Light – When the pilot light goes out in a gas furnace, the furnace will not start up a heating cycle. To troubleshoot the pilot light or ignition system, first see if there is a flame. If not see if the gas supply is on or being fed to the pilot light. You may need to relight the pilot light. However it is important to make sure the gas isn’t leaking and follow all safety procedures before lighting the pilot light. If the pilot light will not light up, it may be broken or dirty and need to be cleaned or replaced.
Step 5. Check the Blower Motor – If you notice your blower motor is not running, this may be why the furnace isn’t starting up. When the blower motor fails, it cannot pump out the warm air. As a result, the furnace becomes overheated. To protect itself, the furnace will not run when it detects too much heat. If your blower motor isn’t working, you may need to have the motor replaced.
