Heaters that are blowing out cold or lukewarm air is one of the most common calls experts receive during the colder months. This problem is something our customers can easily fix on their own with just a couple of troubleshooting steps, which is the good news. Today, we at New York Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing would like to share the most common reasons why heaters blow out cold air, along with recommendations for what to do in each scenario.
Takes Time for System to Warm Up
It can take a while before air coming out of your vents feels warm when you first turn your heater on for the season. It can lose a lot of heat along the way as the air your furnace heats has to travel through cold ductwork. Not as much heat will be transferred to it as air blows through it, once your ductwork has warmed up. The air coming out of your vents should start to feel warm at that point.
Incorrect Thermostat Settings
Double-check your thermostat settings first when the furnace’s performance is not up to par. To ensure it will only circulate air while your heater is heating the air, you want the device to be switched to “auto.” Your system is going to circulate air throughout your home whether that air is getting warmed or not if your thermostat is set to “on.”
Clogged & Dirty Air Filters
It can get clogged with dust when you leave an air filter in too long, which restricts airflow through your heating system. The more likely it is to overheat, the less airflow your system has. Switch will shut off the burners to prevent extensive damage when the system gets too hot as some furnaces are equipped with a high limit switch.
Throughout Ductwork, Warm Air is Being Lost
There is a huge probability that the air ducts have a lot of gaps, tears, and holes if in the event you live in an older home and the ductwork has never been replaced. Due to normal wear and tear, aging materials, and pest activity, this can happen. We recommend getting it replaced and sealed if your ductwork has seen better days. You will a significant difference in your heating and cooling bills as well as a definite improvement in your system’s performance.
Ignition Problems are Affecting the Furnace
It will struggle to heat your home while simultaneously producing more pollutants and increasing your heating costs when your furnace can’t burn fuel as efficiently as possible. Due to a lack of annual preventative maintenance, furnace ignition issues frequently occur, though there may also be a problem with the gas and oxygen mixture being supplied to your furnace’s burners. To help you get to the root of the ignition issue, we recommend involving a professional HVAC technician in any case.
