What to Do if Furnace is Not Kicking On, Has No Power or Stops Working in Winter in Sunnyside Queens, NY?

You are definitely relying in your furnace daily with us officially into winter. It can be more than frustrating as you try to stay warm without it when the furnace breaks down. Your furnace is not a luxury appliance, it is a necessity and when the furnace breaks down in New York, it can be more than frustrating. To avoid surprise furnace failure, preventative maintenance is the first step. Ensuring you keep up on your care will void a lot of repairs. Scheduling a tune-up annually, preferably around the fall, for your heating system is a must. It is never too late to get the system tuned-up if you missed the fall timeline. Over time and use, the furnace can suffer wear and tear. With this in mind, we at New York Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing would like to share a few of the mid-season furnace problems that commonly occur.

Furnace Not Kicking On when Temp Drops

There could be a few possibilities, though there are more serious than other reasons as to why your furnace is not starting. Your otherwise perfectly running furnace is not operating due to a reason concerning the thermostat for example. A faulty thermostat is mild, considering the potential issues that could be affecting your furnace. Begin at the thermostat if your furnace is not turning on. Make certain the battery is fresh and the settings are correctly in place. Keep in mind the setting could have gotten bumped off the correct setting of “heating”. Be sure to assess the wiring and look for wires that are frayed, broken or disconnected. If the thermostat is beyond the settings and battery, call in the pros for help.

Why Does My Furnace Not Have Power?

If power is the issue, the furnace will obviously not power on. To make sure the circuit breaker hasn’t been tripped, check it after you know the thermostat isn’t the issue. If the furnace is a gas-furnace, a pilot light might have gone out. Also, the issue can be electrical related since gas-furnace does use an electric ignitor. There are some underlying problems that require the professional training and experience of a licensed specialist if these prove to be false leads.

What Causes a Furnace to Not Shut Off?

A furnace never shutting down is another issue that creeps up. This issue may not even go noticed in the coldest of days. When it doesn’t shut off it can be detrimental to your furnace is it causes damage to the system’s internal parts, however. This result can also be due to a thermostat. With a signal to shutoff and that the set temperatures have been met, a faulty thermostat may not be sufficiently supplying the furnace. If it does not run continually, it could also be set so that is “on”, where it should be set to “auto”. The furnace tries endlessly, though the temperature may be set at an unrealistically high setting and cannot reach the temperatures as well. Another common issue is that the air filter is clogged. Depending on the type of filter, once every 1-3 months, remember they should be cleaned or changed. Checking on them monthly can ensure they are changed often enough.
