If your air conditioner is not running and you have checked the circuit breakers and they did not trip, you may be having a problem with the relay. When it gets very hot outside it can cause the relay to become stuck which will prevent the air conditioner from starting up. New York Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing will share how to determine if you have a stuck relay, what to do if it happens and when to seek professional HVAC services.
What is an Air Conditioner Relay
The air conditioner’s relay is a switch that controls the flow of power to the air conditioner unit. Basically the relay turns on and off the air conditioner. All HVAC systems will have relays within the unit. The relay is a metal spring or clip that when closed makes contact with another metal piece that allows the flow of electricity. If the relay is open it no longer makes contact with the metal and wiring system, basically cutting off the flow of electricity. This metal clip or spring can be stuck open preventing the air conditioner from getting the power it needs.
How Do I Know if My AC Relay is Bad?
A relay can wear out over time. When they do, they may become stuck and most often in the open position, preventing your air conditioner from turning on. In some cases the opposite problem occurs where the relay becomes stuck closed, preventing the air conditioner from turning off. A relay can even open in the middle of a cooling cycle, forcing the air conditioner to turn off suddenly. You might even hear a clicking noise coming from the air conditioner when the relay isn’t working. When you have these signs or symptoms, you can inspect the relay. There may be visible damage to the relay. At this point you will need to have the relay replaced.
How Do You Clean an AC Relay & Contactor?
As long as there isn’t visible damage or corrosion, the relay may be able to be repaired. To repair a relay you basically need the relay cleaned. A dirty relay can become stuck. If this is the case, you are in luck. Cleaning a relay is a much simpler solution. If you are not familiar with electrical safety and the potential risks, it is highly recommended that you have a professional clean the relay. To clean a relay you will need to turn off the power to the unit, and then locate the relay. As each unit will vary on where the relay is located, you may need to see a manual if you plan to clean the relay yourself. The relay will than need to be removed. You can use an air can if desired. The dust and the debris will need to be cleaned out. Rubbing alcohol is used to clean relays. If you are cleaning the relay, make sure to cover the wires with masking tape to prevent damaging the wiring. Make sure the relay is completely dry before putting the relay back.
