Quite a few people believe air conditioners add cooled air to your home where in fact is actually draws the warmth out of the air. To make the room feel significantly cooler to people, quite a bit of the heat is being removed. Similar to how a swab of alcohol makes a person’s skin feel cooler as the liquid evaporates, the air conditioning takes advantage of the effect of evaporation. We at New York Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing would like to take the opportunity to share the basics of how the air conditioner in your New York home operates in an effort to help people better understand how the conditioner works.
How Do Home Central Air Conditioners Work?
With a unique ability to change from a gas to a liquid in a short amount of time, a chemical known as refrigerant is found in every air conditioner. Pumped into the unit is the refrigerant. The compressor, expansion valve, condenser, and a thermostat are other primary components found in the air conditioner. With the motorized fans, thin metal fins allow heat to dissipate quickly to circulate the conditioned air. Because it has to be durable enough to withstand a significant amount, the heaviest part in the air conditioner is the compressor, generally located at the bottom of the unit, is the compressor. The refrigerant entering the compressor in liquid form. The refrigerant is pushed through the compressor’s inner chamber where it is heated and pressurized. Much like a car’s radiator dissipating heat from the engine coolant, the hot gas goes through a series of condensing coils. By the time the refrigerant reaches the end of the coils, the refrigerant has transformed into liquid form and is significantly cooler. The liquid refrigerant is still under high pressure in order for it be forced through the expansion valve, a very tiny opening. Since it needs much lower temperatures to do so than water, the refrigerant begins to evaporate while traveling through another set of coils. Heat is removed as the evaporation process occurs the air contained in the room and all surrounding air. The cooling sensation is created from the unit’s fan blowing across metal fins placed over these coils.
What is the Cycle of Air Conditioning?
The entire process begins again until a thermostat registers a specific temperature and shuts off the compressor, just after the liquid refrigerant has become a cold gas again and re-enters the compressor. The thermostat senses the added heat and the compressor kicks back on to create more of the hot pressurized gas when the room warms up. The compressor will shut itself off again when the temperature of the room equals the cooling power of the air conditioner at some point.
