An air conditioning system mainly uses two major components. One unit is the air handler. The air handler is located inside the home most often in the attic. The second unit is the condenser that is located outside, either on the roof or on the ground. The condenser has a series of its own components that can wear down and require maintenance and repairs. New York Air Conditioning, Heating & Plumbing will share how the condenser works and some of the common problems the condenser can develop.
Function & Components of AC Condenser
The condenser is the large unit found outside of the home. It is most often located on the ground which requires a concrete pad. Inside the condenser there are a number of different components that work with the air handler to create the cool air for the home. Inside the condenser you will see these components:
• Compressor
• Fan and Fan Cover
• Copper Tubes
• Circuit Broads, Electrical Wiring, & Switch
• High and Low Pressure Switch
• Condenser Tube and Fin
• Muffler
• Liquid Line and Suction Line Valve
• Condenser Coils and Cover
When the air conditioning system runs a cycle and once the refrigerant has been compressed, it is then sent to the condenser. Once the compressed refrigerant makes its way to the condenser, the condenser coils will help release heat from the air. The condenser fan will then suck up the heat and blow it outside. The condenser is an essential part of the cooling process. When the condenser develops problems, the cooling system will fail.
Common AC Condenser Troubles
There are a few things that can go wrong with the condenser. When the condenser develops problems it will affect the overall function of the cooling system. One common problem that occurs is when the aluminum fins of the coils become bent and damaged. When the fin becomes bent the air will not pass through them properly, which will impede the cooling process. Another common problem is that the coils can become dirty. When the coil becomes dirty it too will prevent proper air flow which interferes with the cooling system. The coils play a major role in the cooling system as the coils must have the ability to release the hot air or you can have hot air blowing back inside. It is important to keep them clean and not damage them while cleaning. That is why it is important to seek professional HVAC services to clean coils when they need it. The condenser can also develop refrigerant leaks. When the condenser develops a refrigerant leak the refrigerant will drop down to very low levels. Once the refrigerant is too low the cooling system will fail to remove the heat from the air. The refrigerant leak will need to be located, repaired, and the refrigerant refilled to restore proper function of the cooling system. Some other common problems to watch for in a condenser are electrical issues, capacitor failure, fan failure and loose or damaged fan blades.
